...is probably the coolest Flickr set, (besides our own, of course) ever! It is an Internet miracle. If you've ever wanted to have your photo featured on a street style blog, you may as well just DIY and put it up on Wardrobe Remix. It's definitely inspirational for anyone in a bit of a relationship rut with their closet. It is probably bad that I personally have that rut once every two weeks or so. I digress, the next step was to throw down a search for some fashionable hat wearers in the group...I thought I would share some standouts:

That one was for all the folks who think the bombers look "silly". She looks awesome!

That lawn chair is giving the hat a run for its money in terms of what makes the photo.

LOVE the framed picture of the girl in the hat behind a girl with a hat. I also covet her bike. Maybe I will actually buy a bike for this Summer...

She totally needs a bit of foam in that hat but I will let it slide, her peep-toes are very cute.

And lastly, just in case you were wondering what the modernization of the Boater in fashion today would look like (just me? Oh, alright)...

Goorin Kids - Sand Cassel Kids is coming to Edie Hats for Spring 2008! No longer does your child need to look like he or she is tiny little strawberry or tomato-head...not that those hats aren't cute in their own right...I'm just sayin, they could have this instead:

Nothing says awesome like father-son matching plaid driver caps! Also in the shipment will be tiny trucker hats and Castro caps so if you know any stylish little chilluns...be sure to check it out before we, you know, run out, like a day later...which could happen!

At the KNOW?SHOW West - Music and Fashion Side By Side

Call me crazy, but I actually rescheduled an appointment to have a nagging wisdom tooth removed from my jawline so that I could check out this bi-annual trade show at Vancouver's Trade and Convention Centre. I visited the Spring/Summer 08 show in the fall with my fellow John Casablancas classmates and helped dress for the fashion show that was held, showcasing Ripcurl, Quicksilver, Nudie Jeans, and much more.

I went with a few goals in mind: First, I wanted to pick up on a few forecasting tips, such as key colors, silhouettes, accessories, that are specific to the skate/surf/board trend demographic. Also, I wanted to learn a bit about Brixton, a very cool and musically influenced brand carried at Edie Hats, but we will save that for later.

Luckily, the KNOW?SHOW provides tons of material, and the vendors hand out catalogs and showcase their brand, so it is not difficult to see the main trends permeating different lines. Flipping through the material, and looking at the booths, something became very clear. The ready-to-wear, hip, young, fashion world is revolving around music right now. This meant plenty of skinny or straight cut jeans, striped tops, fedoras, little bomber style jackets, and so on and so forth.

Exhibit A:

This editorial in the KNOW?MAG featured 8 glossy pages of pretty boys and girls dressed up in skinny jeans, flannel shirts, jean jackets and striped cardigans, posing before drums, mics, keyboards, strats, and my personal favorite, with cheap wine and cigarettes in hand. Come on. Really?

Exhibit B:

Here we have the very front page, the cover, of the Brixton catalog. It Sends a pretty distinct message, and one that is completely in line with their company image.

It only became clearer, as I looked through the Vestal Watch booklet, and my eyes happened upon the likes of Peaches, Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal, Carah Faye of Shiny Toy Guns(Anyone have an urge to buy a Motorola Razor? I guess I watch too much television), and Jesse Keeler formerly of Death From Above 1979, and now with electro-outfit MSTRKRFT, all wearing signature Vestal accessories. Of course there was a fair share of skateboard and snowboard heroes along the way, but the marriage between this culture and the artists and music that inspired it became a huge focus. Interestingly enough, a focus that has influenced fashion both mainstream and underground.

This is wonderful news for someone of my persuasion. I know those bands, I've been reading about their rise to fame for a few years, but when this end of things met the board-riding community is news to me! It is very cool, though. I wish I had a better adjective to describe it, but I think 'cool' sounds about right. The two brands mentioned above are on the money in regard to trend and fashion, so check them out!

Matt Costa is an artist we play on our iPod at the store, and he just so happens to be performing in Vancouver at the Commodore on February 10th, 8pm. This is his new single, "Mr. Pitiful", and it has basically been stuck in my head all day, so maybe it can get stuck inside yours instead!

Delux Spring Line - Coming Soon!

If you're one of the many lovely people wondering what will be on the horizons for Edie Hats from Delux, I've just finished scanning the Spring '08 catalog for our Newsletter (sign up sign up sign up!) and our website and have prepared a teaser:

Many of these will come in an assortment of light Summer-inspired colours and all are made of a lightweight fabric. Many of the styles we will be receiving are unisex as well, such as the fedoras.

High Fashion and Hats

I love Vogue for inspirational purposes. The imagery is always so intentional...meant to be challenging, meant to be inspirational, or even in the case of the advertisements, meant to stand out. I was flipping through the February '08 issue and happened across these full-page ads for Mochino and Mulberry. I love how the Mulberry ad presents a strong look where the clothes and accessories are striving for the same goal. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mochino pairs unlike garments and accessories.

This just would not have been the same without the military style Fidel cap. It's a perfect example of, "finishing a statement". The blouses look to be Satin, but have a military flare through the use of buckles and hoops. Great eye make-up, great accessories.

Next up:

This Mochino advertisement is awesome because the Stetson seen here becomes more of a prop to the photo than a part of the outfit. When was the last time you saw a Mountie in a sheer voluminous empire waist dress?

To style, fashion and culture central for the Edie Hats "empire"! This blog was established to provide a slightly different angle for our customers -one that inspires and stirs creativity for the accessory-afficionado. Additionally, it will take a look at hats in Vancouver from the perspective of fashion and trend. Culturally, I will be tying this into a wide spectrum of music and other forms of art. My aim for this is for you to be able to sit at your computer with a cup o' whatever 'tis you drink, listen to some chill tunes, check out what is new in the store and abroad in the hat world, and be inspired to play with your sense of style. When you want to make a statement with your outer appearance, it's only right to finish it off with the perfect accessories!

My Background (in case you were interested!)
I graduated from John Casablancas Institute in Gastown, Vancouver in November of 2007, receiving a diploma in their Fashion Arts & Business Program. I've been with Edie Hats since November of 2007. I was invited to do some work on the many Edie Hats e-endeavors and really enjoyed it. Soon I had cooked up my own vision for a blog that catered to a more fashion-slanted aspect, mixed with cultural flare and a few other odds and ends.
